French Railways run a motorail service as far as Nice (the service down
through Italy was discontinued several years ago).
Alternatively you can travel to Bologna from the Dutch town of 's-Hertogenbosch and from various points in Germany.
We understand that there are also plans for a service to start up for Summer 2008 from Brussels, details to be confirmed.
